Le-Ata is a fashion brand owned and operated by Leata Mailo McCarthy. The brand name, Le-Ata, combines two Samoan words, with a dash in between, meaning “The images” or “The Smile.” Leata takes pride in her identity as a Pacific Islander and uses her platform to promote a contemporary fusion of fashion and her Pacific culture and heritage through the use of Elei and Kupesi Printing.

The brand was established in 2007 while Leata was on a break from university to have her first child. She started selling her products in a garage in New Zealand, then expanded to markets and online sites like Trademe. Despite her husband’s work requiring their family to travel around the Pacific, Leata has successfully established a physical store in Nukualofa, Tonga, and has expanded her brand to Samoa and American Samoa. Le-Ata products can also be found at distributors in New Zealand and Australia.
